Soroptimist
Tivon holds one monthly meeting, which usually combines
a social gathering and a lecture of general interest, presented by either
an outside lecturer or a club
member. Part of the meeting is devoted to announcements and other internal affairs. Meetings are
held in the homes of club members,
except for special occasions when we have invited many non-members to participate. These meetings are then held in a local public venue.
In January or February we meet in small groups for intimate
suppers at the homes of members.
We call these evenings “From Heart to Heart.”
Our
club plans at least one all-day outing annually, generally including a cultural
event and a visit to a restaurant.
A
recently inaugurated tradition is for soroptimists who share the same birthday
month or, alternatively, Zodiac sign, to meet for brunch.
The
last meeting of the year is a pot-luck Garden Party.
We have been especially busy since
June 2002: For the past 20 years
we have held an annual 3 day Used Book Fair in May, the proceeds of which are devoted to
women’s scholarships and
other worthy causes. Because of the security situation this
year, the Fair was cancelled. In
order to generate funds, one of our members, Erika Meyer, conceived the idea of
holding an Auction and proceeded to organize and execute what proved to be an
enormous endeavor. Donations of
objects were solicited within Tivon , as well as from outside sources. These had to be collected, catalogued and stored. Since the Benefit Auction included refreshments and entertainment, these
had to be organized , as well.
Tickets were sold by the members of the club. In spite of inclement weather, the affair went well and
we will be able to contribute to a number of charitable causes, including equipment for a Club house (Enosh) serving sufferers from
emotional problems which impede
their integration into the activities of the community.

We
are also sponsoring an outing for an after-school care and enrichment project
(Mo’adoniot) for underprivileged children, as well as a program which provides
a support group (Mother to Mother) for troubled families. In addition to the financial aid,
several of our club members work on a volunteer basis within
these frameworks, as well as with other community programs.
In September 2002, we were informed that,
after all, we would be able to hold our Book Fair at the beginning of
October. We promptly plunged in
and sorted the books in our storage room and went ahead with what proved to be
a successful source of funds
for scholarships. These were distributed on February 20, 2003.
