HISTORY

The Soroptimist Club of Tivon was founded in 1963. The first President was Dr. Aliza Yallon, a gifted pediatrician who celebrated her 90th birthday in March, 2003.
From the outset, the members of the Tivon Club combined the community based goal of Soroptimism with its international aspect. Very shortly after receiving its charter, Soroptimist Tivon acquired a number of sister clubs abroad. During peaceful periods, there were visitors from both the European Federation and that of Great Britain with ensuing reciprocal visits on both official and private missions.
Members have also visited clubs in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, the U.S. and Canada.
Today we have sister clubs in Stockport, England, Braunschweig, Germany and Brugg, Switzerland. In 2001 Aliza Benjamin visited our sister club in Stockport and also attended the regional meeting in Ramsbottom.
In a return visit in July 2002, she met with several of the Stockport club.

MEMBERSHIP

Although Tivon is a small town , we are lucky to possess a very active community of volunteers. This is reflected in the fact that we generally number between 25 – 30 Soroptimists.
At present, there are 27 members, including two of the founders of the club. One of these, Nelly Almosnino, is still active and serves as chairman of the Good Will and the International committees. Dr. Yallon, our first President is no longer able to attend meetings because of poor health, but still interests herself in our activities and continues to sponsor one scholarship each year.
Since the future lies with the young, we feel privileged to have at present 5 candidates for membership, one of whom will be inducted into the club in March 2003.
