Soroptimist Conference 2006
Sylvia Flowers- Rehovot Club, May 2006

The Israeli Sorops get together once a year
They come from afar, they come from near.
120-160 strong at the Sorop conference we met
At kibbutz Shfayim, because there were halls and rooms to let.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for the women to speak
At all our conferences it’s the men who are “weak”!
For some talks we sat on the lawn, under a huge old tree
And members told of wonders in Denmark they did see.

This time, one lecturer stories from the Bible retold
According to her, Sarah, Rivka and Rachel were women really bold.
It seems that from them we’ve a lot to learn
Even if none of us for these far-off days do yearn!

The main session was concerned with women and Israel’s laws
A retired judge, army judge, criminal defence lawyer and professor
All gave talks without flaws.
I know that a famous author once said that the law is a fool,
However, in these women’s hands, it can be a very useful tool.

Friday evening the programme was devoted to poem and song
The three performers never once put a foot or note wrong.
At the end of the day, conferences aren’t just serious, they’re also fun
Now I’ve revealed the real reason why we come!
