Kaunas club: last year we appealed to the Lithuanian embassy in Tel-
Aviv to honor poet Lea Goldberg putting a plaque on the building of
the Hebrew gymnasium in Kaunas. Not only did Kaunas club consent, to
support this application, but Asta Balciunaitiene, then club president and
a teacher in the English department of the local university with her
students translated the poem the Pine tree into lithuanian, also club
members participated in the unveiling ceremony, and planted a pine tree
under the plaques.
On the occasion of the visit of the Prime Minister of Lithuania in Israel
last month, I forwarded his itinerary to the Kaunas club, urging them
to visit Israel. In return I was informed that they continue with the
translation project, and made arrangement to visit Kaunas great
Synagogue to see the gallery of portraits of Kaunas famous Jews,
including lea Goldberg.
Central &South West London club: long term relations were
renewed when upon my letter to the club they asked Gloria Proops to be
the contact person between our clubs. Gloria mentioned in her letter 13
year of contact with several Soroptimist members in Israel, and
especially Sharon club Soroptimist event on Dec 11 2001 dealing with
Agunot (abandon wives) problems. Until now Gloria has helped 36
women to get a divorce from their husbands.
Gloria also shared with us members problem, the reason why they
merged with central club, and how happy they are to adopt a new
member, hoping to be an active one in the club.
