SI/E president-elect Monique Reviere visits the club of Taibe
The Taibe club soros were in almost full force at the home of their president
Hanan Nashaf. They all greeted Monique Reviere warmly and quickly it
transpired that she could understand many of the words spoken in Arabic. We
learned at she had been born in Agadir Morocco and spent more than 20 years
there before moving back to France when her parents retired from their civil
service. Monique told us that even when she hears Hebrew words come back to
her because in her childhood they had Jewish neighbors. This really strengthens
the belief in the importance of childhood upbringing.
Hanan's home is extremely suited to receive visitors. It was a very warm day and
so we sat inside and no air conditioning was needed!! Each member described
what profession she represents and what volunteering she does in the
community. We were all impressed by what a small group of members can do.
They are unfortunately currently just 16 members!
Hanan raised the issue of the dues that have to be paid. She explained that in
other women's organizations that her have chapters in Taibe the amount is much
less and since many women are still dependent for the approval of their
husbands they are hesitant to name the sum that is expected of them. Monique
made some suggestions about using the volunteer work as a factor in enlisting
new members since the municipality is very proud of their work in Taibe.
The visit ended with a tasty and "plentiful" brunch and wonderful Turkish coffee.
As usual the warmth of the reception was outstanding and we, Hava Inbar –
Israeli Union president, Aliya Kedem - driver and Monique were very sorry we
had to leave.
